What is CompTIA Network+ (N10-009)?

N10-009 tests networking as it is practiced today: the OSI model and common ports and protocols, IPv4 addressing and subnetting, routing and switching, wireless, cloud connectivity, monitoring, disaster recovery, network security, and a structured troubleshooting methodology.

The exam has five domains. Network Troubleshooting (24%) and Networking Concepts (23%) are the largest, but Network Implementation (20%) and Network Operations (19%) are where most PBQs live — configuring devices, reading diagrams, and choosing the right service or tool.

CompTIA recommends A+ and 9–12 months of hands-on experience, but the exam has no formal prerequisite.

Who should take N10-009?

  • Help-desk and support technicians moving into network administration
  • Junior network administrators and NOC staff who want a vendor-neutral credential
  • IT professionals preparing for Security+, Cloud+, or vendor networking certifications

Job roles this supports

  • Network administrator
  • Network support technician
  • NOC technician
  • Systems administrator
  • Network field engineer

Exam-day tips for N10-009

  1. 1Practice subnetting until you can size a subnet and find the network, broadcast, and usable range without a calculator.
  2. 2Know port numbers and the secure alternative to each clear-text protocol (Telnet→SSH, HTTP→HTTPS, FTP→SFTP).
  3. 3Use the troubleshooting methodology as an ordered list — identify, theorize, test, plan, implement, verify, document.
  4. 4Be ready to interpret command output (ping, traceroute, nslookup/dig, ipconfig/ifconfig, netstat) in PBQs.
  5. 5Treat wireless questions by standard, band, and security mode — WPA3 and 802.11ax appear on the current exam.

N10-009 frequently asked questions

How many questions are on the N10-009 exam and how long is it?

CompTIA Network+ (N10-009) has maximum of 90 questions and a 90 minutes time limit. Question types include multiple-choice and performance-based questions (PBQs).

What is the passing score for N10-009?

The N10-009 passing score is 720 (on a scale of 100–900).

What domains does N10-009 cover and how are they weighted?

According to CompTIA’s exam objectives (version 6.0), N10-009 covers 5 domains: Networking Concepts (23%), Network Implementation (20%), Network Operations (19%), Network Security (14%), Network Troubleshooting (24%).

Is CompTIA Network+ hard?

Network+ is a broad exam rather than a deep one. The parts candidates find hardest are IPv4 subnetting, the sheer number of protocols and ports, and performance-based questions that require applying a concept in a simulated scenario. Structured practice on those three areas covers most of the risk.

Do I need A+ before Network+?

No. CompTIA recommends A+ and 9–12 months of networking experience, but it is not required. Candidates with real network-support experience often go straight to Network+.

Does Network+ N10-009 include IPv6 and cloud networking?

Yes. Objective 1.3 covers cloud concepts and connectivity (VPC, gateways, VPN, Direct Connect), objective 1.7 addresses IPv4 addressing, and objective 3.4 covers implementing IPv4 and IPv6 network services.

Network+ or Security+ first?

If your role is network-focused, take Network+ first; the security concepts in Security+ build on networking knowledge. If your job is security-centered, many candidates go straight to Security+ and return to Network+ later.

Is N10-009 the current version and when does it retire?

N10-009 (exam version V9) launched on June 20, 2024. Retirement: Usually three years after launch (estimated 2027). Confirm current dates on comptia.org before booking.

How long is CompTIA Network+ valid?

CompTIA certifications are valid for three years from the date you pass and can be renewed through CompTIA’s Continuing Education (CE) program or by passing the current version of the exam.

How many N10-009 practice questions does CompCertQuiz have, and what does it cost?
