How the 720 passing score works
720 is a scaled score, not a percentage. CompTIA converts raw performance to the 100 to 900 scale so that different exam forms are scored comparably. You cannot turn 720 into a fixed number of correct answers, and CompTIA does not publish a raw cutoff. Give every question a real attempt, and never leave one blank.
For comparison, Security+ SY0-701 needs 750 and the two A+ exams need 675 and 700. See Security+ format and passing score if you are planning the next step.
What the questions cover
Questions are spread across five domains, and the weights show where the points are:
| Domain | Name | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Networking Concepts | 23% |
| 2 | Network Implementation | 20% |
| 3 | Network Operations | 19% |
| 4 | Network Security | 14% |
| 5 | Network Troubleshooting | 24% |
The domain-by-domain breakdown is in the Network+ N10-009 study guide.
Performance-based questions on Network+
PBQs put you in a simulated task. On Network+ expect things like placing devices in a network diagram, matching cable types or ports to a scenario, choosing correct IP settings for a host, reading command output to find a fault, or ordering the steps of a troubleshooting process. CompTIA does not publish how many PBQs appear or how they are weighted, so treat any exact figure as unverified.
- Skim each PBQ. If it is a topic you know, do it now; if it is long or unfamiliar, flag it.
- Answer the multiple-choice questions first; they are faster and equally valuable.
- Return to flagged PBQs with the time left.
- Read every instruction line for constraints.
- Verify your final state before you submit.
Pacing and calculation tasks
With up to 90 questions in 90 minutes you have under a minute per item on average. Subnetting questions can eat time if you work them bit by bit, so learn the shortcut method with block sizes until it takes seconds; the subnetting cheat sheet and our subnetting practice tool are built for that. Reserve the last 10 to 15 minutes for flagged questions.
How to practice the format
Practice in timed 30 to 45 minute blocks and include structured question types, not only multiple choice. CompCertQuiz questions are original material, not CompTIA content; try the free questions on the Network+ N10-009 page before deciding on the full bank. Memorize the port list first, because it is useful across many domains: see the ports and protocols cheat sheet and TCP vs UDP.
Frequently asked questions
