A CompTIA exam voucher costs between $298 and $439 in the US, depending on the exam. Security+ and CySA+ are the most expensive at $439, while A+ costs $274 per exam but needs two exams, so $548 in total. The table below lists the current US list price of every exam we cover, the price with CompTIA's retake bundle, and the legitimate ways to pay less. The cheapest is the new SecAI+ at $298; see the SecAI+ CY0-001 exam guide for what it covers.

"Voucher + Retake" is CompTIA's Exam Voucher Plus Retake Assurance bundle: one attempt plus one retake if you do not pass. A+ is two separate exams (Core 1 and Core 2), and you need both to certify, so budget $548 for vouchers alone.
What happens if you fail: the retake policy
CompTIA's retake policy is short and strict:
- Every attempt costs the full exam price. CompTIA states there are no free retests and no discounts on retakes.
- No wait before your second attempt. From the third attempt on, you must wait at least 14 calendar days after your previous attempt.
- You cannot retake an exam you have passedon the same exam code without CompTIA's consent.
That is why the retake bundle can be worth it. For Security+, a voucher plus retake is $579 against $878 for two separate vouchers. Read the voucher terms first, though: the retake only unlocks after you take the exam and do not pass, both attempts must happen within 12 months of purchase, and if you never sit the first exam the retake is forfeited.
Voucher rules to know before you buy
- Vouchers are valid for 12 months from the date you receive the code, and the date cannot be extended. If the exam retires sooner, the retirement date applies.
- No refunds or exchanges. CompTIA vouchers cannot be refunded, exchanged or resold.
- Buy for the right exam version. A voucher is tied to an exam, so check the exam code you studied for (for example SY0-701 versus the incoming SY0-801) before you buy.
These points come from CompTIA's voucher terms, which are the binding source if anything here differs.
Legitimate ways to pay less
CompTIA lists these discount routes on its voucher discount page:
- Student pricing. Students actively enrolled at eligible US institutions can get 35 to 55% off products in the CompTIA Store, verified at checkout. It cannot be combined with other discounts.
- Bundles. CompTIA sells exam vouchers bundled with its own training (CertMaster) and often with a retake. A bundle only saves money if you would have bought that training anyway.
- Employer and training-program vouchers. Many employers and training providers buy vouchers for staff and students; ask before paying yourself.
- CompTIA promotions. CompTIA runs occasional sales on its own store.
Avoid heavily discounted vouchers from unknown resellers. CompTIA vouchers cannot be resold, and a voucher that turns out to be invalid or already used is money lost.
Budget for the whole certification, not just the exam
The voucher is the biggest single cost, but two others are worth planning for. First, practice material: a failed attempt costs a full voucher, so checking your readiness first is the cheapest insurance. Second, renewal: most CompTIA certifications are valid for three years and renew through continuing education, with a fee for each three-year cycle (for example $150 for Security+). See our Security+ exam cost breakdown for a worked example.
If you are still choosing a certification, our Security+ vs Network+ vs A+ comparison explains where each one fits. Every exam in the table has 40 free practice questions you can try without a credit card before you spend anything on a voucher. If you are booking Security+, the 30-day Security+ study plan helps you pick a realistic exam date.
